Ireland Issues New Guidelines for Long-Stay Student Visa Applications

International students who plan to study in Ireland for more than 90 days are required to secure a long-stay study visa before entering the country, according to Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery (ISD).

As reported by the Economic Times, the immigration authority stated that non-European Economic Area nationals enrolling in courses exceeding three months must apply for their visas from their country of residence or origin.

Applicants are allowed to submit their visa requests up to three months before their intended departure date. The process begins with completing an online application through Ireland’s Automated Visa Application and Tracking System. After submission, applicants must print, sign, and date the summary form, pay any applicable visa fees, and provide all required supporting documents.

These documents typically include a valid passport, recent passport photographs, proof of private health insurance, an acceptance letter from an Irish educational institution, and evidence of tuition fee payment. Applicants may also need to show academic records, proof of English language proficiency where required, and financial evidence demonstrating sufficient funds to support their stay.

The ISD also requires applicants to declare any previous visa refusals. Additional documentation, such as parental consent and accommodation details, may be requested for applicants under 18 years old.

Authorities cautioned that incomplete applications may be rejected, and any false or misleading information could lead to refusal and a possible five-year ban from applying for an Irish visa. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received, and immigration officers may request further information before reaching a decision. Students are also advised not to book travel until their visa has been approved.

The ISD further emphasized that holding a valid visa does not guarantee automatic entry into Ireland. On arrival, students must still satisfy immigration officers that they meet all entry conditions and may be required to present the same documents used during their application.

While it is possible to apply for an extension of stay, such requests are rarely granted and are only considered in exceptional circumstances, provided they are made before the current permission expires.

Prospective students are encouraged to carefully prepare their applications and ensure all information is accurate and complete to avoid delays or refusal.
