Canada is introducing visa-free travel to 13 countries, making it easier than ever to explore the country.
To be eligible, travelers from these countries must have either held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or possess a valid United States non-immigrant visa. This step is to aim to streamline the pretravel screening process, making it easier, faster, and more affordable for applicants.
Canada’s Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) anticipates that this decision will redirect thousands of applicants from the visa caseload, enabling them to process visa applications more efficiently. This move follows the success of a pilot program implemented in Brazil in 2017 which led to a 40% increase in visitors from Brazil and a 60% reduction in the caseload at IRCC’s Sao Paulo office. These improvements allowed IRCC officers to focus on more complex applications.
It’s important to note that while over 50 countries can enter Canada without a visa, many require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or visa requirements unless they plan to work or study in Canada.
For nationals of countries not exempt, a Temporary Residence Visa (TRV) is necessary for visiting Canada. The TRV allows a six-month stay, with possible variations for certain foreign nationals. But remember that holding a TRV does not grant permission to work or study in Canada. However, you don’t need a study permit to study in Canada for less than 6 months.
The passport holder from the following countries can travel to Canada without applying for a Temporary Residence Visa, under the above-stated conditions:
Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Costa Rica, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, Seychelles, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, and Uruguay.
The lucky 13 countries should be ready to explore Canada’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and rich culture without the hassles of a visa.
